Getting To Know You

Where are you from?

Loveland, Colorado. Valentine’s Day capital of the world.

Can you tell me a little about your background?

Grew up in Colorado. Parents were public educators, hard workers. Was a good student/athlete, graduated salutatorian. Went to college on a football scholarship. Started as a intern in DC, didn’t know anyone. Worked my way up the food chain. Got into PR cause I liked the variety of working on multiple issues on any given day.

Who is your spirit animal and why?

A tortoise- a friendly plant eater but a bit of an introvert, and always wearing the same comfortable outfit.

What would your ideal Sunday entail?

Golden Retriever.  Boundless energy. Smart.

If you could have dinner with three people – dead or alive – who would you choose?

Bill Clinton, Deion Sanders, Elon Musk.

What’s your favorite curse word?

How did you arrive in NYC/SF?

15 years in DC, moved West for a change of pace.

Last song you listened to on your phone?

YG by Big Bank.

If I wasn’t in PR, I’d be…

Coaching or a sports agent.

About your work at Ditto

How did you end up at Ditto? And why did you decide to work here?

Got tired of grinding it out at Edelman. Had dinner with Trey and took a chance. We both agreed that there is a better model for PR.

How would you describe working at Ditto?

Like working at a startup. Relentless pursuit of perfection and trying to disrupt the PR industry as a whole. Results matter. Being held accountable matters.

What makes Ditto different than your past jobs?

The ability to change things you don’t like or see as inefficient. Have an impact.

What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered (and hopefully overcome) at Ditto?

Growing up quickly. Getting beyond a scale where you can’t physically be touching every account.

Do you have a moment this year you are particularly proud of?

Reflecting back on when it was just me, and hiring Margaret and Yahea. Total of 7!

If you had to describe Ditto in three words, what would they be?

Scrappy. Relentless. Results.

Bigger thoughts on life and career

How do you think the PR industry could improve?

How do you think the PR industry could improve?

What tips would you give on balancing work and personal time?

Meditate every morning and set an intention. Yoga helps.

If you could go back in time and give yourself advice before your first job, what would you say?

Don’t try and change things overnight. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Take time to get to know the culture and the people before you try to change things. Look for early wins.

Talk about the challenge of balancing priorities like results and outputs with less tangible work like creative thinking.

I think the key is to have high expectations. It will raise the bar on both. Don’t settle for the easy way out … if you try for Tier 1 the bar is higher. Better ideas, better thinking, better results.

What makes for a positive work environment?

Positive energy. Work hard. Play hard. Do good. Have fun.

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a good boss?

Someone who lets you fail. Encourages you to be better. Always there when you need them. A trusted friend and advisor.
